It’s hard to express how huge and open this world is: rolling green fields generously dotted with billowing foliage of all shapes and sizes fill the space between ramshackle and loosely connected townships where people struggle to survive. The Witcher 3 is just as dense and deep as the other two games in the series in terms of RPG mechanics, and the overwhelmingly massive open-world environment has made that depth more intimidating and, in the long run, more rewarding. But every time I went off the beaten track to blaze my own path, it turned into a wild, open, and exhilarating fantasy RPG experience, filled with opportunities to make use of its excellent combat. Compared to The Witcher 2, where you immediately dive into a sexy tale of intrigue and betrayal, this main quest can seem mundane, even superficial at times. There were a lot of “open world” games before GTA. Since Grand Theft Auto III was released in 2001, we’ve been completely concerned with games that don’t punish us for completely circumventing our authority to explore the worlds they’re in.
